Piriformis Syndrome and Massage Therapy

women

In my San Antonio, Texas based Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice I often treat pain from various syndromes including Piriformis Syndrome. Like many painful conditions Piriformis Syndrome responds quite well to massage therapy and bodywork.

What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis Syndrome is the name of a painful nerve entrapment condition in which the sciatic nerve is placed under abnormal pressure by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle attaches to the sacrum bone of the low back to the top of greater trochanter of the femur (thigh bone) and lies on top of the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and enlarged, pain results from myofascial trigger points (knots) in the muscle, pressure on the sciatic nerve, and sometimes from the S-I Joint in the low back. Pain from Piriformis Syndrome is usually found in the extreme low back, buttocks, hip, and often the back of the thigh. Most of the time the symptoms are on one side, but may affect both sides in some cases. Additionally, people with Piriformis Syndrome often have trouble sitting for long periods and the pain may worsen when walking or squatting.

What is the cause of Piriformis Syndrome?

There are a number of causes for Piriformis Syndrome including direct blunt trauma to the buttocks, prolonged sitting while working or driving, Morton’s foot, or S-I Joint instability. Frequent or prolonged running on canted surfaces and participation in sports requiring quick lateral movement such as tennis, skiing, and basketball may also overstress the piriformis muscle and lead to Piriformis Syndrome.

Massage Therapy and Bodywork for Piriformis Syndrome

There are many ways that massage therapy and bodywork can be used to treat Piriformis Syndrome. The massage therapist will employ a number of techniques to relieve the condition. For example the massage therapist may use Neuromuscular Therapy or Trigger Point Therapy to eliminate myofascial trigger points in the piriformis muscle. The massage therapist could also use Myofascial Release techniques or Deep Tissue Massage techniques to release adhesions between the piriformis muscle and surrounding tissues while also using Muscle Energy Techniques to gently lengthen the piriformis muscle. Piriformis Syndrome also responds well to positional release therapies such as Ortho-Bionomy which work with the body’s nervous system to release muscles and improve joint movement in the area. In addition to working on the piriformis muscle it may be necessary to provide therapy for other muscles near piriformis and even to muscles opposing piriformis to improve muscular balance. Comprehensive treatment with massage and bodywork, in conjunction with a home program of stretching and exercise, usually helps to completely resolve Piriformis Syndrome.

Other Treatments for Piriformis Syndrome

While massage therapy and bodywork are an excellent treatment for Piriformis Syndrome there are other treatments you should discuss with your physician:

Importance Of Medical Tests Before Buying Medical Insurance

women7

A commonplace advertisement from insurance companies is ‘no medical tests required to purchase an insurance policy’. People are attracted to the convenience of no-test policy compared to the one that requires all medical tests. But is it really right to purchase a policy without knowing your health condition?

Every individual going to buy an insurance policy whether health or life insurance needs to undergo medical tests as prescribed and should be aware of his health condition. This article discusses the importance and reasons for getting an insurance policy after taking medical tests appropriately.

Premiums are based on health condition
The premiums of an insurance policy (health or life) are charged based on the individual’s health condition. You need to make a declaration about your health condition in policy application form and the insurer fixes a premium rate on the basis of your discloser.

For understanding this clearly, lets take an example of two persons. Of them, one has high sugar levels and the other person has normal sugar levels. If both take insurance policy from a company that does not require medical tests then both will be charged same premium. But in reality, the premiums for normal persons should be less than the premiums of others with health issues.

The policies that require no-medical tests are:

Low value policies: Policies that do not consider health tests offer cover not more than Rs 5 lakh. So, if you are looking for a higher cover, that serves your life/health insurance needs, then you should take pure protection policy that requires you to undergo medical tests.

Prone to rejection easily: In most cases, the person who is taking insurance without a medical test may not be aware of his/her health condition. S/He may suffer from an illness and may not know about it till a medical test is conducted. In such a case, an insurer can reject the claim as these policies contain suppressed facts of your health condition with no proper underwriting. So, these kind of unintentional mistakes may simply deprive insurance cover even for those paying huge premiums.

Cover may be inadequate: If you get policies that require no medical tests, then you will also get the policy that has no appropriate insurance cover. It is like getting insured, but having no adequate insurance protection.

It is the actual responsibility of insurance company to determine the health condition of an insurance buyer. An insurance company simply cannot deny the claim as it is its responsibility to subject the policyholder to medical tests and then fix the premium.

Thus, a detailed medical examination that requires blood and urinalysis related tests, blood sugar, ECG, blood count, blood pressure, blood serum tests etc. will benefit you manifold. It provides your health condition report which tells you how fit you are. If you are suffering from any illness, get it cured before it ruins your health. Get complete medical record of your health before buying insurance policy.

Medical School Admissions Process Decoded

women6

Getting into medical school is exceedingly challenging. Well over forty thousand prospective applicants enter into the application cycle each year with less than fifty percent obtaining admission. Success calls for a lot more than scholastic and extracurricular expertise and experience. It takes finding out the actual requirements of the various admissions committees, having good recommendations, and authoring impressive essays which get their attention.

Although the specific application system doesn’t open up until June of the calendar year before matriculation, the actual medical school admissions process actually starts the very day you enter college or university. It does not matter if you are applying during your junior year of college or even a few years subsequent to graduating, the committees will start by evaluating your scholastic and extracurricular experience starting as far back as freshman year! Normally, high school situations don’t seem to be applicable except when there are extraordinary circumstances. This is particularly the case if you can show experience in the medical field during your high school years. If this is the case, then you would address it in your personal statement.

You should commence with the main application form the January prior to when you plan your matriculation. Yes, this is in fact 21 months before you actually start medical school! Plan to spend January to April scheduling, planning, and taking the Medical College Admissions Test, securing recommendations, and requesting transcripts from all schools which you have taken courses (you must include all grades for all courses). May and June are all about writing the actual American Medical College Application Service application, which is the primary application. The AMCAS includes a work/activities segment as well as the notorious personal statement. As soon as you’ve completed the AMCAS application form, July to September is devoted to secondary applications (otherwise called secondaries). Secondary applications are a grueling aspect of the admissions process wherein individual schools send their own application asking for between zero to ten supplemental essays on subjects covering anything from diversity towards the greatest error in judgement you’ve ever made (yes, that’s an actual question). Medical school admissions interviews take place from October through January. February is a time of limbo during which not much happens. While various medical school admission’s committees (particularly those which have a rolling admissions), will inform you regarding your acceptance, wait list, or rejection standing prior to the spring, you typically won’t hear something until about March or April. By May fifteenth, every applicant who has been given an acceptance offer from two or more schools will have to decide on specifically where he or she wishes to attend and withdraw applications from all other schools. The admissions process basically ends on the first day of school when you put on that white lab coat and officially become a Doctor.

Laser Therapy Can Relieve The Symptoms Of Neuropathy

women13

Neuropathy, a disease of one or more peripheral nerves in the body, is not very common but does affect thousands of people in the United States alone. There are different causes of the neuropathy disease, including diabetes as one of the most common, but regardless of the actual cause, the disease occurs when certain nerves in the body are damaged. When a person has the disease, they typically experience pain and numbness in the associated area, most commonly the hands and feet. Neuropathy can be an extremely uncomfortable and painful disease, and those dealing with it must find a treatment to offer relief of their pain and discomfort.

Fortunately, there are different treatments available, including the laser treatment for neuropathy. The low light laser therapy works because it bypasses the blood stream, and helps deliver healing to the ailing body in a few different ways. The treatment uses bio-available energy through intact skin and jump-starts the healing process in the body. The laser therapy also works in a second way, by sending radiant infrared energy deep in the walls of the blood vessels. By opening up the electrical pathways in the body, nerve cells are able to be repaired and the patient gets relief of their pain as a result.

By going to a professional company and getting the therapy you want, you can get relief of your symptoms and live a healthier, more normal life. The laser therapy for neuropathy may be all you need to deal with those uncomfortable, often extremely painful symptoms caused by your disease and get back to your regular life. People living with this condition should realize there is hope and that there are treatments, which work. Even if you have tried other methods to no avail, the laser treatment is an ideal option and definitely worth a try.

Stem Cell Therapy For Head Injuries

women17

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has remained a major cause of mortality, morbidity and leading cause of large-scale disabilities worldwide. TBI results in a large number of deaths and a cause of permanent disabilities with enormous losses to individuals, families, and communities [1]. World Health Organization (WHO), in 2004, has estimated that 25% of road traffic collisions requiring admission to a hospital suffered TBI [13]. Pathophysiology of TBI involves two main phases: these are primary injury following the trauma, and the secondary injury which is mediated by inflammatory response to trauma.
However, no effective therapy or program is available for treatment of individuals with TBI; nonetheless, researchers had tried some therapeutic agents like levodopa/carbidopa and some neurotrophic factors in brain injury with persistent vegetative state with the aim of augmenting and slowing the progression from persistent vegetative state into some degree of consciousness. This still needs experimentation to confirm if these dopamine precursors and other neurotrophic factors have any role in TBI.
Solomon O. Ugoya and Jian Tu from Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University; and Technology Place, North Ryde, Sydney, Australia, respectively, have stated that Neural stem cells (NSCs) have recently been shown to contribute to the cellular re-modeling that occurs following TBI and attention has been drawn to the area of neural stem cell as possible therapy for TBI. The NSCs may play an important role in the treatment of TBI by replacing the damaged cells and eventual remyelination. They also pointed out that they can achieve the translation of basic knowledge of neural stem cells into therapeutic options in persons with TBI by enhancing and integrating these neural progenitor cells (NPCs) unto neurogenesis and directing these cells to the specified targets or through multi-potency where the transplanted cells can differentiate into glial cells, neurons, and endothelial cells, as the i confirm if these dopamine precursors and other neurotrophic factors have any role in TBI.
Solomon O. Ugoya and Jian Tu from Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University; and Technology Place, North Ryde, Sydney, Australia, respectively, have stated that Neural stem cells (NSCs) have recently been shown to contribute to the cellular re-modeling that occurs following TBI and attention has been drawn to the anjuries are not always selective but diffuse and we may need to induce these transplanted cells into appropriate phenotype.
Neural stem cell therapy is a strategy that offers hope in the future for treatment of brain injury. In addition, we are now able to monitor autologous neural stem cells in vivo, cell migration and clearly demonstrate that neural stem cells could selectively target injured brain or spinal cord tissue and undergo neurogenesis.
Recently, more attention has been drawn to the area of stem cell therapy, largely due to advanced knowledge about stem cells. The stem cells may play an important role in the treatment of TBI by replacing damaged cells, and helping functional recovery. The search for stem cell therapy for TBI is progressing.
